Yantra—A Sacred Geometrical Pattern

In Hinduism, we believe in sacred rituals that help find peace, growth, and prosperity in our lives. These rituals include different types of geometrical patterns that are designed to connect with the divine source. Yantra also comes under this category, and it is installed at home to worship daily with specific affirmations. There can be different types of Yantras designed for different purposes, such as Vyapar Vriddhi Yantra, Shree Yantra, Kuber Yantra, Lakshmi Yantra, etc. Before knowing more about these specific kinds of Yantras, let’s first understand what a Yantra is:

What is Yantra?

Yantra is a sacred geometrical pattern that is engraved on a metallic plate or a crystal plate. These designs are believed to emit positive vibrations in the surroundings if installed properly at your sacred place or pooja space. Yantra is a kind of Mandala, designed with sacred symbols and patterns in symmetrical forms. It is considered a diagrammatic representation of different mantras, and hence it helps an individual resonate with positive energy by eliminating the negative one, allowing you to grow spiritually.

Yantra is a Sanskrit word that means "machine" or "instrument". According to Sadhguru, it is also considered a machine that forms a very purposeful combination within itself. If you try to make a machine, you need to assemble several gear wheels, and then it becomes a machine. Likewise, a yantra is a simple machine form—simple or complex—depending on its purpose. When you combine multiple yantras, they form a larger yantra or a larger machine.

Let’s suppose we take the human form—it’s a machine, the most sophisticated one on this mother Earth. However, as children, we all want a bicycle, which is simpler compared to a human being. But why? A human has two legs with the most mobility, yet to go faster, we need some catalyst or some yantra. So, as kids, we get a bicycle as our first yantra. And we start to think that life is made with that bicycle. Here, the bicycle creates a phenomenal impact on you.

Later in life, we see someone riding a Yamaha motorbike, and again we suddenly desire that Yamaha yantra. Later, we notice someone driving a Mercedes, and we develop the desire to own that Mercedes as a yantra. So we want that too.

As per Adi Shankaracharya’s book Saundarya Lahiri, which is an authoritative work on yantra, the meaning of yantra is to control, curb, bind, or influence.

According to ancient Vedic scriptures, different kinds of yantras are made for different purposes. Among all yantras, the Sri Yantra is considered the most powerful.
